If something/someone is sacred to someone else, do you feel bound by this? Why or why not?
There are things I once held sacred, but no more. Things I still hold sacred: Safeco Field, a walk along the beach, intimate moments with family and friends, the sky by day or night, the autonomy of my own mind. There are people I hold sacred: my parents, my wife, my children. Of all these, I think I would only be offended if my people or my mind were abused by the profane and the ignorant. But then, even now, I feel myself back-sliding on this ... wanting to also include the institutions of human learning, science, medicine, mathematics, etc.
Clearly there's a treacherous slope here.
Most other things and people, however, are fair game for defamation in my opinion. In fact, I often feel compelled to destroy the sacred idols of others -- particularly if others expect me and the rest of the world to share their adoration and reverence. Particularly if folks demand my reverence. Particularly if they threaten me with bodily or metaphysical harm.
For your Sabbath-worshiping pleasure ...
Let me take you to the movies. Can I take you to the show Let me be yours ever truly. Can I make your garden grow.
From the houses of the holy, we can watch the white doves go From the door comes Satan's daughter, and it only goes to show. You know.
There's an angel on my shoulder, In my hand a sword of gold Let me wander in your garden. And the seeds of love I'll sow. You know.
So the world is spinning faster. Are you dizzy when you're stoned Let the music be your master. Will you heed the master's call Oh... Satan and man.
Said there ain't no use in crying. Cause it will only, only drive you mad. Does it hurt to hear them lying? Was this the only world you had? Oh-oh
So let me take you, take you to the movie. Can I take you, baby, to the show. Why don't you let me be yours ever truly. Can I make your garden grow.
You know.
